One Pay

Serving niche markets

Summary

For over 13 years, OnePay has supported UK recruitment agencies, farms, and employers by providing a secure way to pay wages to seasonal or temporary workers without traditional UK bank accounts. These workers play a crucial role in the economy but often lack identification and formal documents, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation. To address this, OnePay aimed to create a payments platform tailored to this underserved group, offering quick onboarding and secure wage payments. The platform needed to accommodate diverse user interfaces, from smartphones to basic feature phones, and support multiple languages.

The challenge

Seasonal and temporary workers play a vital role in the UK economy, but many arrive without identification or a UK bank account. While they may have the legal right to work, the lack of formal documents leaves them vulnerable. Some employers may turn them away, while others suggest using another person's bank account, which can lead to complications. In some cases, workers are paid by cheque, which they often cannot cash without a bank account, leaving them to rely on third parties who may exploit them financially. This exposes them to significant risks and exploitation.

By evolving its middleware layer, Pannovate connected all key systems OnePay, card issuers, and processors.
